IGNOU M.A. Economics (MEC)- How to study & Important books

All about IGNOU M.A. Economics (MEC)

Economics is one of the most job oriented course as it deals with real-life examples and market conditions. Since it is a dynamic subject, it requires in-depth knowledge of the core principles of economics.

Job prospects-
As compared to other Arts subjects, a post-graduate degree in Economics is an educational eligibility criterion for the maximum number of Class-I and Class-II government jobs. UPSC Indian Economic Services, RBI, Exim Bank, NABARD, Public and Private Sector Banks, Assistant Statistical Officers, Research Officers, Economic Officers both in State and Central governments, Lecturer/Assistant Professor in degree colleges & universities, NITI Aayog, etc. are a few examples which requires candidates having PG degree in Economics every year. Thus, M.A. Economics (MEC) offers a wide range of scope for both government and private jobs.

Fees and Eligibility for IGNOU M.A. Economics (MEC)-

IGNOU offers Two year M.A. Economics (MEC) course both in English and Hindi. Total fee is Rs. 14,400/- i.e. Rs. 7,200/- to be paid for 2 years. The eligibility criteria is a “Bachelors degree or higher in any discipline”.

In general, the IGNOU material is considered to be very lucid and easy to understand but in case of M.A. Economics, I didn’t find the IGNOU material up to the mark, especially for the 1st year. Even with my background of engineering, I found that many concepts are explained only mathematically without explaining it in theory, which makes them difficult to understand. In lieu of above, I have listed only one additional book for complex subjects in M.A. Economics along with IGNOU course books.

Using the following books will not only help you with securing 1st class marks in IGNOU Term End Exam (TEE) but will also simultaneously and automatically make you ready for competitive exams like UPSC, State PSC’s, UGC Net, and many more. I completed M.A. Economics (MEC) from IGNOU in 2013-15 and secured IGNOU University Gold Medal for M.A. Economics for obtaining highest marks.

Along with the books mentioned below, securing good marks in assignment should also be given special attention as they have 30% weightage in final marks calculation. Hope this article will help you in gaining knowledge about Economics in a long run and may even help you in getting IGNOU University Gold Medal!

Hey Ravi, just wanted to know have you written about which sections/chapters to study in the books mentioned. I have bought the books you mentioned. however, these books are so large it looks like it is impossible to study them all while working. :-) any strategies you have for studying. thanks, Sunjay

Hello Sunjay,
You may refer the books topic wise. First get an overview of the course with IGNOU books. Then you can refer the above books for complex topics giving priority to topics asked in previous year TEE papers. I was not able to understand most of the sections with IGNOU books. You may get stuck with the IGNOU text (specially mathematical sections) as there are many printing mistakes.
Hope that helps!

Do's & Dont's from the first to last day in college

"The only permanent thing in this world is change" From the cosy comfort of your house to bunking up with strangers in a hostel room is one of the most adventurous yet uneasy feeling in the world. If you are amongst a lucky few whose parents came to drop you in college, to help you get settled in hostel by buying various day to day hostel amenities like cots, bed sheets, pillow, bucket, soaps, hangers etc., consider yourself extremely lucky if they don't get overwhelmed while leaving you behind just to ensure that you don't get weak in your commitments.  But if they are not able to control their emotions and give you that blissful teary Good-Bye hug, don't look down upon them, don't get embarrassed that so many guys/girls/faculties are watching, Embrace them, tightly, like you have never done before. And trust me when I say this, the walk from the place where your parents left to your hostel/class, will be the longest walk you will eve...
